Background of the Study

Traditional rites of passage in Ikom have long been celebrated as pivotal milestones that mark the transition from childhood to adulthood. These ceremonies, steeped in cultural symbolism, serve to instill community values and preserve ancestral wisdom (Mfon, 2023). With the increasing influence of western education, there has been a notable shift in how these rites are perceived and practiced. Western educational paradigms, which emphasize scientific reasoning and individual achievement, often conflict with communal and ritualistic aspects of traditional ceremonies (Ekong, 2024). As a result, many young people find themselves caught between modern academic demands and the expectations of traditional cultural practices (Abasi, 2025). This study examines how western education influences the performance, perception, and relevance of traditional rites of passage in Ikom. It considers both the erosion of indigenous practices and the potential for integrating modern educational elements to revitalize these ceremonies, ensuring that they remain relevant and meaningful to younger generations (Okon, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

The influence of western education on traditional rites of passage in Ikom is causing concern over the dilution of indigenous cultural practices (Udo, 2023). As formal education gains prominence, traditional ceremonies are increasingly neglected or altered, leading to a loss of cultural identity among the youth. This study aims to explore the tension between modern educational values and traditional rites, identifying challenges and proposing ways to integrate both systems effectively (Ekong, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the impact of western education on traditional rites of passage.

2. To document changes in traditional ceremonies due to modern influences.

3. To propose strategies for integrating educational and cultural practices.

Research Questions:

1. How does western education affect traditional rites of passage in Ikom?

2. What changes have occurred in these ceremonies?

3. What measures can integrate western educational values with traditional practices?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Western education significantly alters traditional rites of passage.

2. H2: There is a decline in the authenticity of traditional ceremonies due to modern influences.

3. H3: Integrative strategies can enhance the relevance of traditional rites among educated youth.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant for its exploration of the intersection between modern education and traditional cultural practices. Its insights will help educators and cultural leaders develop approaches that preserve indigenous rites while accommodating contemporary educational values (Abasi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the influence of western education on traditional rites of passage in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, focusing solely on local ceremonial practices.

Definitions of Terms:

• Western Education: Modern formal education systems emphasizing scientific and analytical thinking.

• Rites of Passage: Ceremonial events marking significant life transitions.

• Cultural Integration: The process of blending modern and traditional practices.
